How It Works

For building owners

  1. Search for a verified assessor near you, or verify one you already have.
  2. Check their competency level and PI insurance status instantly.
  3. Appoint them with confidence, backed by a formal record.

Why Verify Matters

As a building owner, you're the Responsible Person under the Fire Safety Order — appointing an assessor who isn't qualified for your building can leave you personally exposed.

Verify Fire checks an assessor's competency level and insurance before you appoint them, not after something goes wrong.

What do Foundation, Intermediate, and Advanced mean?

Every assessor is verified against a BS 8674:2025 competency level, matched to how complex and high-risk a building is.

Don't know which level applies to your building? That's normal — most building owners don't.

Answer 3 quick questions to find out

UK fire safety legislation, in brief

The rules Verify Fire is built around.

2005

Fire Safety Order

Made a building's owner or occupier the "Responsible Person" for fire safety, with a duty to carry out a fire risk assessment and act on it.

2021

Fire Safety Act

Clarified that the Fire Safety Order covers a building's structure and external walls — including cladding — and flat entrance doors, not just communal areas.

2022

Building Safety Act

Introduced a stricter safety regime for higher-risk buildings and reinforced that whoever carries out your fire risk assessment needs to be genuinely competent to do so.

2025

BS 8674:2025

The British Standard defining the three competency levels — Foundation, Intermediate, Advanced — that Verify Fire verifies assessors against.

This is context, not legal advice — speak to a qualified fire safety solicitor for guidance specific to your building.

Frequently asked questions

For building owners

Is my assessor legally required to be verified?

Not verified by us specifically — but as the Responsible Person under the Fire Safety Order 2005, you're required to ensure whoever assesses your building is competent to do so. Verify Fire is how you check and document that before you appoint someone, rather than assuming it.

What does the document prove?

The Formal Compliance Document confirms an assessor's verified qualifications, BS 8674:2025 competency level, and current PI insurance status as of its date of issue — with a reference number and QR code anyone can use to check it's genuine.

Can I use it as evidence of due diligence?

Yes — it's a dated, referenced record you can keep on file or share with insurers, tenants, or auditors if your choice of assessor is ever questioned.

For assessors

Who can see my documents?

Your qualification and PI insurance certificates are reviewed by our verification team only. Building owners never see the documents themselves — only your verified status, competency level, and whether your PI insurance is current.

What happens when my PI insurance expires?

Your profile shows "renewal required" the moment it lapses, visible to anyone checking your credentials — so it's worth renewing and re-uploading your certificate before it expires rather than after.

How long does verification take?

We review submitted profiles within 48 hours.
